Next-generation impregnation technology
Komsol Shield represents the latest advancement in concrete surface protection. By combining deep-penetrating
colloidal silica with water-repellent silanes, it delivers two levels of defense in a single application – internal
densification and external hydrophobicity. This innovative hybrid approach ensures effective protection against
moisture, chlorides, and environmental wear – without sealing in trapped moisture or altering the surface
appearance.
How Komsol Shield works
Komsol Shield combines two protective mechanisms in one treatment. The colloidal silica penetrates into the
concrete’s pore system and reacts with calcium hydroxide to form a dense internal structure. This process helps
reduce internal porosity and limits the movement of water and contaminants.
At the same time, the silane component chemically bonds to the surface and near-surface zone of the concrete,
creating a water-repellent (hydrophobic) layer. This dual action blocks external moisture and chloride ingress,
while still allowing water vapor to escape from inside the structure.
The result is a breathable concrete surface with reduced absorption, improved durability, and no visual change in
texture or color – all achieved in a single application.
When to use Komsol Shield
Komsol Shield is ideal when:
- You want to protect exposed concrete from rain, freeze/thaw cycles, or chlorides
- You need both internal barrier and hydrophobic effect – but prefer one product and one application
- You prioritize simplicity and performance over structural reinforcement
Komsol Seal is type-tested and CE marked for infrastructure use.
Tested and certified according to:
-
EN 1504-2, System 2+ (CE)

Green building
Komsol Shield has been independently assessed from an environmental and health perspective by Swedish
building product evaluation systems. These assessments support compatibility with green building standards
such as BREEAM and LEED.
